• 6 Reasons to Switch to Gmail (Addons, Scripts & More)

  Have you made the switch yet from Yahoo, AOL Mail or Hotmail (or any other non-customizable email) to Gmail? Well, recently I decided to make that switch & I'm glad I did.
  
  Gmail is hands down (in my opinion) better than Yahoo, AOL Mail & Hotmail. There's so much that I can do with Gmail that I never even imagined. Now, I really can't believe that I stuck it out with Yahoo for so long.
  
  Besides the 10 reasons to use Gmail that Google lists, I have my own 6 reasons to add to the list. If you don't have a Gmail account, these 6 reasons might convince you to switch. For those who do have Gmail, hopefully you'll find the tools & features I mention very helpful.
  
  1. You can really take control of your email using labels & filters, like I explained in detail here. Gmail allows you to automatically filter out any email messages (specified by you), allowing you to keep your inbox clean & bearable.
  
  
  
  2. There are quite a few firefox addons that really allow you to customize Gmail to be used to its full potential. I'll just point out a few that I think you'll like (all compatible with the newest version of Firefox).
  
  Better Gmail 2 - Add useful extra features and 3 unique skins to Gmail, like hierarchical labels, macros, signatures, file attachment icons, and more.
  Gmail Manager - Allows you to manage multiple Gmail accounts and receive new mail notifications. Displays your account details including unread messages, saved drafts, spam messages, labels with new mail, space used, and new mail snippets.
  Email This! - Email This! will send your recipient the link, title, & highlighted text of the page you are viewing using GMail.
  Gspace - This extension allows you to use your Gmail Space for file storage. It acts as an online drive, so you can upload files from your hard drive and access them from every Internet capable system.
  Gmail Signatures - This extension automatically inserts HTML signatures into your Gmail messages based on which address you are sending from. Works for Compose Message and Reply/Forward.
  
  3. Gmail's custom "From:" feature lets you send messages with another address in place of your Gmail address, making it easier to manage multiple accounts from the Gmail interface. When you're sending with a different "From:" address, your Gmail address will still be included in your email header's sender field, to help prevent your mail from being marked as spam. Currently, you can add up to 5 other email addresses.
  
  4. Gmail offers "POP Download" & "IMAP Access". POP & IMAP lets you download messages from Gmail's servers onto your computer so you can access your mail with a program like Microsoft Outlook Express, Netscape Mail or Apple Mail even when you aren't connected to the Internet.
  
  POP & IMAP also allow you to forward your email to unique web clients like Zenbe & Orgoo, which I like to call webmail aggreagators. Orgoo is more social with IM, Video Chat & SMS features while Zenbe is more professional & task oriented.
  
  Orgoo - Orgoo is fairly new & is still in private beta (I have 3 invites to spare if anyone is interested). With Orgoo you get: all your IM accounts (AIM, MSN, YIM, GTalk & ICQ); all your emails (Gmail, AOL, Yahoo Mail Plus, Hotmail Plus, .Mac, USC Mail); SMS; Video Chat; Video Mail; Calendar; & Contacts.
  Zenbe - With Zenbe you get: all your emails (Gmail, AOL, or Yahoo Mail Plus); Facebook & Twitter updates; GTalk; ZenPages (share calendars, task lists, files & email); File management (browse your attachments independently). What more can you ask for? Their private beta is now over, so anyone can sign up.
  
  5. Web Clips show you news headlines, blog posts, RSS and Atom feeds, and relevant sponsored links, right at the top of your Gmail inbox. Each clip displays the source from which it was received, how long ago the clip was published, and a link to access the entire story or page containing the clip. The best part is that you can spec

• Take Control of your Digg Shouts with Gmail

  About a couple weeks ago, I wrote about how my Digg shouts were getting out of hand & taking over my inbox. Well, I've finally figured out a way to put an end to my Digg shout madness! I know this isn't the only way but, it's the way I've found to be most helpful to me.
  
  The first thing I did was to switch my email from Yahoo! Mail to Gmail. In doing so, not only did I find a way to filter out Digg shouts but, I also found a more reliable & customizable email client. I'll be talking about some of the reasons to switch from Yahoo! Mail to Gmail in my next post.
  
  The second thing I did was to figure out two simple features in Gmail, labels & filters. Labels are equivalent to folders in Yahoo! Mail & you can create as many as you'd like. Filters allow you to specify the criteria you'd like to use for determining what to do with a message as it arrives.
  
  So, I created a label called "Digg" & then created a filter to send all email messages from Digg (noreply@digg.com) to that "Digg" label. I also made sure the messages would skip the inbox completely & be immediately archived (to the "Digg" label) as soon as they are received.
  
  Step by step instructions on creating labels & filters in Gmail:
  
  Click on settings in the upper right hand corner.
  Click on the "Labels" menu heading.
  Create a new label by typing a title in the text box & clicking on create. Your label has now been created & can be seen in your Gmail sidebar.
  Click on the "Filters" menu heading.
  Click on create a new filter.
  Choose your search criteria such as a "from" email (noreply@digg.com for Digg), "to" email, subject, ect. You can put in as much or as little as you like. Only a "from" email should be needed even though, if you have mail being forwarded from other email addresses (like I do), you might want to put in a "to" email as well just to specify.
  Click on next step.
  Choose the action(s) you would like applied to the incoming email messages. For my Digg shouts, I choose "Skip the inbox" & "Apply the label" (choosing the label I created from the drop down).
  Click on create filter & you're all down.
  
  Now your inbox won't be crowded with all those Digg shouts or any other messages that you choose to filter; they'll go straight to the specified label.
  
  What's even better is that Gmail will group together all messages from the same title & the number of messages in a group is displayed as well. So, you can see which people are sending you TOO many Digg shouts & take action!

• Top 10 Week | Make MySpace Functional With Greasemonkey Scripts

  It's no secret that the population & activity on MySpace has dropped considerably within the past year or so. I know that personally, I only go on MySpace to view messages, comments & friend requests (which takes all of 5 minutes).
  
  Though MySpace is such a great marketing tool, why is it that people don't use it as much or abandon it? In my opinion, the number one reason is because of all the ads (or crap if you prefer) that are plastered all over each page. Secondly, MySpace seems to be very slow in implementing more advanced features unlike other social networking sites.
  
  Thanks to Greasemonkey scripts, I think I've finally found a way to make MySpace more functional & bearable so that I'll actually go there more often. So, I'm ending my "Top 10" week with my favorite MySpace Greasemonkey scripts. Hopefully, you'll find these scripts useful as well.

  1. MySpace Enhanced Photos - Enhances photo album functionality. Users can view full versions of images as well as corresponding caption and comments directly in album view.
  
  2. Custom MySpace Home - Remove ads from the new MySpace homepage and arranges your page to make best use of the space; stretches to fit your screen width. These are FULL SCREEN screenshots!
  
  3. MySpace Mail Plus - Enhanced mail functionality & adds a frame to view messages.
  
  4. Better MySpace Login - Helps the login page to load faster by getting rid of everything on the page.
  
  5. MySpace Birthdays on Homepage - Just what it says, it will list your friends' upcoming birthdays on your homepage. Since MySpace likes to send you reminders way too much in advance, this is really helpful.
  
  6. MySpace Comments on Homepage - Displays & automatically updates your last three comments right on your MySpace homepage. If you want to view more than the last three comments, you can just click on "view more".
  
  7. MySpace Remove Ad Blocks - Removes various MySpace ad blocks, including sidebar and sponsored links in searches.
  
  8. MySpace Pic Enlarge - As you move your mouse over small MySpace photos, this script will display the enlarged photo plus a little bit of information about them in a tool tip type box.
  
  9. MySpace Edit Profile Redesign - Adds some aesthetics to the edit profile pages & includes drag & resize textareas.
  
  10. MySpace Clean Bulletins - Removes ads from the side of the page while stretching the bulletin to fit the ow freed up space. By default, the script removes certain HTML tags (big, font, h1-6, small, style) from bulletins but, this can be turned off if desired.
